This seems counter productive for me, as a wannabe food blogger, to admit this, but most mornings I have the exact same thing for breakfast. Yes, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Yes, sometimes I make breakfast for dinner. Yes, I spend all week thinking about what cool brunch recipes I can try on Sunday morning. But during the work week, I have this thing called work, which means I don’t get much time in the mornings to spend on cooking.
And when you’re lacking on time, what could be easier than just blending some stuff up and drinking it down while you layer on your 729 face products? I tend to stock up on bananas over the weekend, and I keep several varieties of frozen fruit in my freezer, in addition to almond milk and this totally awesome hemp protein powder that I recently discovered. It is a little light on the protein compared to other powders I’ve had in the past, but it doesn’t have that gross chalky flavor, and it’s paleo to boot!
My current favorite recipe is a blueberry avocado hemp protein smoothie. Sounds like something you would find on the menu of some hipster cafe right? It’s actually really delicious and you don’t even taste the green stuff! It’s just creamy blueberries and banana, with the added benefits of healthy fats and a protein boost.
Blueberry Avocado Hemp Protein Smoothie
1-1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries
1/4 cup hemp protein powder
almond milk (or milk of your choice)
Just add all the ingredients to your blender, cover with almond milk, and blend it up! Use as much almond milk as you need to get the consistency that you want. The great thing about smoothies is they aren’t an exact science, so feel free to tweak to your own taste buds!
The second part of my breakfast is usually a cornucopia of vitamins. Yes, I just used cornucopia in a sentence. What about it?
I’m anemic so I take iron. I recently learned that dairy gives me acne, so I take calcium and vitamin D. Biotin to keep my nails from being as flimsy as a piece of paper, magnesium to help me feel like something resembling a positive human being, evening primrose oil to ward off hormonal acne, fish oil, turmeric, and of course my regular multivitamin. Some people will call this overkill and claim that I just have really expensive pee, but believe it or not, I do see a difference in both my mood and my energy level when I take my vitamins regularly versus when I don’t.
Of course, as an aspiring minimalist (ha), I don’t love having 18 bottles on top of my fridge. This month I’ve been trying a new company, called Care/of, that sends you your tailor made (and fully customize-able) vitamin regime in daily packets, all in one small box for the month. It’s been really nice going from the picture above to this:
And the packets are so travel friendly! So I don’t have to feel doubly gross and sluggish after going to see my friends in New York and partying for the weekend. Double win.
If any of you are interested in trying out Care/of, you can take their quiz and get recommendations for which vitamins you should be taking here. And yes, you can remove or add whatever you like to what they recommend, based on your own preferences/budget.
What are your go-to breakfast recipes? What vitamins do you take regularly and have you noticed a difference? I want to know in the comments!
I was provided a free month of Care/of vitamins in order to test them and provide my opinion on them for this post. If I had a bad experience with the brand, or didn’t think they were worth sharing, you wouldn’t be hearing about them. All opinions are my own.
